Adults Returning to Lessons

"I have been asked to teach an older adult who is returning to piano lessons after a long absence. She is not an advanced student. What books do you suggest?"

Leila Fletcher Adult Piano Course.
There are two books in this series - each includes an accompaniment CD. The CD allows the student to hear the songs being taught and also provides rhythm accompaniment. The books work well for an older returning student as the material progresses rapidly. Theory notes are supplied throughout the book and the songs are familiar. For example, Book 1 contains Scarborough Fair, Ode to Joy, Fur Elise and Music Box Dancer. Book 2 contains Greensleeves, The Entertainer, Moonlight Sonata and Danny Boy.

"I Used to Play Piano" by Lancaster and McArthur.
This unique book begins with a section entitled "What Do You Remember?". After answering the questions the student or teacher can determine the appropriate place to begin in the book. This book moves along quickly and teaches pieces at a more difficult level than Book 2 of the above mentioned Leila Fletcher series. This book would be suitable for a student who had previously reached a Grade 5 or 6 Conservatory standing.

Other nice features about "I Used to Play Piano" are the composer notes and the mini-dictionary of terms and musical notation.
