Sound Advice Levels 1 - 8 published by Frederick Harris
"Too often, music theory instruction empahsizes written concepts, with little or no attention paid to the way things actually sound." Students go online to access audio tracks and hear melodies, rhythms and intervals.
Our staff gets a lot of positive feedback on this series. There are 24 lessons in each book and the book provides lots of review. Each level matches a Royal Conservatory grade; for example a student playing or singing at a RCM Grade 5 level would use the Level 5 Sound Advice book. We recommend the Prep Rudiments Bk 1 and 2 for a beginning music student. It is suitable for students, age 7 and up. The book also comes with a small answer book, with each page of the answer book corresponding to the same page in the workbook, which makes the job of correcting assignments so much faster!
The series also continues past the Prep level and moves into Basic, Intermediate and Advanced levels, which correspond to the Royal Conservatory Theory exams. Answer books are also available.
Feedback on these theory books has been very positive. One teacher commented that she loved the Review Test at the end of every lesson - not only did it review the lesson, but it reviewed everything learned so far. Teachers have also liked the removeable flashcards at the back of the book, and simple reference guides on the inside of the front and back covers.
